You Can't Make This Stuff Up
2011
Tyvek, wood, paper, acrylic paint, cardigan sweater from Nordstrom, glitter, elastic, twine
9.5' x 7.5'
You Can't Make this Stuff Up is a satirical yet self-reflective take on the increasing corporatization of culture and the impunity of the super-powerful from a historical perspective. A large, shaped glitter painting of a children's holographic party hat is draped over a tipi. Upon entering the structure, viewers see the Tyvek interior and are invited to peruse a book detailing the artist's ancestral lineage. Upon spending a few minutes, one might find that the artist is related by marriage to Pocahontas, destabilizing notions of difference that would assume separate interests of groups based on familiar indicators such as race.
